Analise stood at the waters edge, the cool water laping at her feet. It was quiet, it always was this time of day, she had decided to let him go. Marlin, the sweet boy who taught her so much, the handsome young man who stole her heart, the valiant man who died protecting her. It was his birthday, he would have been 26 today, his parent had him cremated when he died and they kindly gave her his ashes when she asked. She had been blessedly, madenly sober for three weeks now and the nightmares had come back with a vengeance but her thoughts were her own and her mind and eyes were as clear as the early morning sky.
The sun started to peak on the horizon and she smiled gently at the warmth, he would like this, her finally saying good bye, closing a chapter on her like nearly a decade later. But it was what she needed, she need closure, she needed to stop dreaming of the boy who never came home, she had enough of those to haunt her now.
Analise sighed as she climbed into her little canoe she had borrowed from her father. The journey out wasn't very long and the sea was calm, she wasn't afraid, the water was her home and she had Marlin to protect her now and forever. Analise gently touched the locket on the long black cord around her neck, a token his parents had gotten her, so he would always be with her. Taking a deep breath she dissentagled the urn from the fishing net she had wrapped it in and opened the lid.
She wanted to say something profound, to thank him for everything, but it made her feel stupid just thinking about it and could hear Marlin mocking her in her mind.
"Good bye Marlin." she said simply as she poured the surprisingly small amount of ashes into the ocean he loved. It was amazing how such a solid person could be reduced to just vase of ashes but there he went. He became what he always wanted a fish, like the one he was named for.
The trip back to shore was longer, mostly because she wanted it to be, the sun was still fairly low in the sky when she finally made it back. Her canoe ground on the gravel shore as she jumped out, her bare feet plashing in the cool summer ocean.
Analise sighed and drug the boat further ashore, she dug her pack out of the front of it and dropped it in the sand far enough away from the waters edge. Analise found the small pile of dried drift that was always kept under a tarp near the cliffs, her cliffs, Marlins cliffs.
She built a small fire and lit it with skill she learned in the arena, skills she still used to this day. She took out apple sauce, apple juice and salted fish, the last meal they shared before they were reaped.
Breathing in the salt she felt content next to the warm fire she took out the net she wrapped Marlins urn in and tossed it on the fire, it flared for a few moments before quieting down. She looked out at the new day, the hot sun slowly rising to its zenith the cool ocean lapping against the shore. It was peaceful, she was for the first time in almost ten years, at peace and so was her beloved.
Joining him wasn't an option, not now, atleast anytime soon, he would be so disapointed in her for wasting her life, the life he died for. That was what he told her, what everyone wanted to know, what he said, he told her to live a good life, to remember him, always to remember him. And she would, it took her ten years to do it, but she would honor him by living a good life, that was the promise she made to him that morning, she would let go of the bottle it would be hard, unbelievably hard, but never again.
If someone came upon her on the beach that is how they would find her thoughtfully staring into the ocean next to a hot fire on a summer day.
